Josh Kerr wins men's mile gold for Scotland at Glasgow Commonwealth Games
Josh Kerr won the men's one mile final for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Saturday (August 1, 2026), securing gold on home soil. Fresh from setting a new world record in the mile in London last month, Kerr crossed the line well clear of the field despite being 12 seconds slower than the mark of 3min 42.66sec he set in London.
An Olympic silver-medallist, Kerr said the Glasgow race was the championships of his season and acknowledged past disappointment, having finished 12th in Birmingham four years ago. "This was the championships of my season," he said, adding: "I didn't put my performance together like I wanted to in 2022 and I think a British crowd deserves more from me, so I owed them that for sure."
Australia's Cameron Myers took silver in the men's mile and Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya claimed bronze, while former world champion Jake Wightman, another Scot, missed out on a podium placing.
In the women's mile, Abbey Caldwell led an Australian 1-2-3 with Jessica Hull second and Claudia Hollingsworth third.
Kenya's Mathew Kipsang produced a decisive kick on the final lap to win the men's 5,000m, denying Australia's Ky Robinson a double after his 10,000m success; India's Gulveer Singh took bronze to add to his 10,000m silver.
Australia won the men's 4x100m with Lachlan Kennedy, Joshua Azzopardi, Calab Law and Rohan Browning crossing in 38.07 seconds to seemingly edge out Canada, but the Canadian team were disqualified, elevating Nigeria to silver and Ghana to bronze.
Samuel Ogazi fulfilled expectations to win the men's 400m for Nigeria, leading home Trinidad and Tobago's Jereem Richards and South Africa's Zakithi Nene; Ogazi, who set the fourth fastest time ever in the 400m earlier this year, said: "I didn't want to come out here and disappoint. I just had to go out there and do my thing." He added: "Maybe an Olympic gold, a world championship gold, become the greatest athlete ever. That's what I'm working towards."
Dejeanea Oakley won the women's 400m, one of five Jamaican track golds on Saturday that also included victory in the women's 4x100m and success in the first-ever mixed 4x400m Commonwealth final.
Navasky Anderson won the men's 800m and Jordan Scott claimed gold in the men's triple jump, while Australia added field-event golds as Matthew Denny won the discus and Kurtis Marschall took the pole vault.
In netball, Jamaica produced an upset to beat holders Australia 46-45 in front of the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children; Jamaican captain Shamera Sterling-Humphrey said: "We knew we had it in us. We're carrying a bit of vengeance from the last Commonwealth Games." The Prince and Princess posted on Instagram: "Incredible atmosphere at the Commonwealth Games today. Watching world-class talent compete and seeing the power of sport to bring people together is truly special."
Emma Finucane became the first Welsh woman to win three gold medals at a single Commonwealth Games after adding the sprint and 1000 metre time-trial titles to her part in the team sprint on Friday; she said: "I absolutely love what I do, so I just want to go out there and ride my bike and enjoy every moment." She could add a fourth gold in the keirin on Sunday (August 2).
Jamaica will face New Zealand in the netball final on Sunday (August 2, 2026).
