Harry Kane missed a penalty and struck the post as Bayern Munich were held to a 2-2 draw by Borussia Dortmund in Der Klassiker on Saturday, with Fabio Silva scoring the late equaliser.

Kane, who collected the Ballon d’Or in London on Monday, had been an unused substitute in Bayern’s 6-1 German Cup second-round win over Magdeburg on Wednesday but returned to the starting XI for the clash with Dortmund. He failed to convert a spot-kick while Bayern were 1-0 up, and his 56th-minute penalty hit the crossbar; Bayern struck the woodwork four times in the match. Silva’s 89th-minute goal left both teams on 18 points, with Bayern top on goal difference.

The first half was frenetic: Bayern hit the post via Michael Olise and Ismael Saibari missed a clear chance before the visitors had a goal disallowed by VAR. Bayern were also affected by injuries to Serge Gnabry and Olise during the contest. The visitors’ defensive resistance initially kept Dortmund at bay.

Bayern went ahead in the 38th minute when Konrad Laimer scored from a rebound after his initial effort was blocked by Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. With Bayern’s head coach, Vincent Kompany, recovering after his collapse last week, Laimer — operating as a full-back — provided one of the main offensive threats for the hosts.

After Kane’s missed penalty, Dortmund levelled on the hour through Serhou Guirassy. The lead lasted only six minutes when Dayot Upamecano tapped in from close range following an assist from Kane, and Kane’s subsequent low shot came back off the post before Silva struck late to restore parity.

Bayern had one final chance in stoppage time when Lennart Karl saw his shot rebound off the crossbar, capping a day of near-misses for the champions. The outcome left Bayern and Dortmund level in the table but separated on goal difference.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Freiburg beat Augsburg 2-1 with Cyriaque Irie’s 85th-minute winner to stay third, RB Leipzig defeated Schalke 2-0 to sit close behind in fourth, and Niclas Füllkrug scored his ninth goal as Werder Bremen beat Hoffenheim 2-0 to move up to fifth. Bayer Leverkusen suffered a 4-2 home defeat to Stuttgart for a second consecutive loss, while Borussia Mönchengladbach and Paderborn drew 0-0.

In Spain, Atlético Madrid went briefly top of La Liga after a 2-0 win at Levante, Alejandro Grimaldo opening the scoring in the 36th minute and Giuliano Simeone finishing the move for the second; Atlético moved one point ahead of Barcelona, who can reclaim top spot later on Saturday if they avoid defeat against Alavés. Players wore black armbands following a train collision in Spain that resulted in the deaths of 69 people this week, and the Spanish federation postponed 24 Copa del Rey games scheduled for Wednesday. In Italy, Bologna beat Monza 2-1 to move up to eighth and Roma beat Udinese 5-2, while Milan will host Inter in Serie A’s first derby of the season in the week the clubs announced more details of San Siro’s replacement.
