Kartal beats Svitolina to reach Wuhan Open semi-finals

On 16 October 2026 in Wuhan, Sonay Kartal defeated fifth seed Elina Svitolina 6-2 2-6 6-4 to reach the semi-finals of the Wuhan Open. The 24-year-old Briton recorded her sixth win in eight matches since returning from injury.
Kartal has dropped to 170 in the world after her long-term injury, but reached a career-high ranking of 44 last summer, and she missed more than six months with a stress fracture in her back. She entered Wuhan using a protected injury ranking to play. She had not been seeded for the event.
Kartal broke Svitolina early in the first set to move ahead before the Ukrainian requested a medical timeout for treatment on her right arm. Svitolina came back to take the second set 6-2, forcing a deciding set. The final set was closely contested until Kartal broke Svitolina's serve at 5-4 to seal the victory.
Earlier in the tournament Kartal beat Italian 15th seed Jasmine Paolini and Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the rounds prior to the quarter-final. Those victories formed part of her run back onto the tour following the injury lay-off.
Speaking on court after her victory, Kartal said she knew "what a great fighter" world number six Svitolina is, so she "was never safe" in the match. "It was solid composure from me throughout," she added. "It's breaking new ground for me this week. "I love playing here and on this court. The atmosphere was amazing, so big thank you to the crowd."
In the other quarter-finals, Jeļena Ostapenko came through a tense opening set to beat 11th seed Diana Shnaider 7-6 (8-6) 6-1. Polish 16th seed Maja Chwalinska faces Maria Sakkari, while American Ann Li plays seventh seed Iga Swiatek.
Kartal will face Ostapenko in her first WTA 1000 semi-final on Saturday; she is only the second British player, after Johanna Konta, to reach a WTA 1000 semi-final since the format's introduction in 2009.
