Kartal defeats Paolini 6-2 6-0 to reach Wuhan Open quarter-finals

On 15 October 2026, Britain's Sonay Kartal beat Italy's Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-0 at the Wuhan Open to reach the quarter-finals, continuing her recovery from a prolonged injury lay-off; the match came in only her third tournament since a six-month absence. The 24-year-old's victory extended a run in which she has won five of her seven matches since returning to competition.
Kartal missed more than six months with a stress fracture in her back and is a former world number 44. Before the injury she had risen into the world's top 50, reached two WTA quarter-finals and registered notable wins that included 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys and former world number eight Emma Navarro at Indian Wells.
Against the Italian 15th seed Paolini, Kartal produced a dominant performance that the report described as ruthlessly brushing aside her opponent, maintaining a high level from the baseline while Paolini unraveled with a series of unforced errors. Kartal backed up her straight-sets win over ninth seed Belinda Bencic from the previous round and said: "Against someone as good as Jasmine is, I knew I had to be solid from the start and not let up. From my side, it was a pretty flawless performance," Kartal said.
Kartal's season had been building before the enforced break; victories over Keys and Navarro in Indian Wells led to a fourth-round meeting with now world number one Elena Rybakina, where Kartal was forced to retire with the back injury that proved more serious than first thought. After initially hoping for a quick return, the pain affected daily life and recovery required difficult decisions.
The injury forced Kartal to miss Wimbledon, a particularly tough choice after she reached the fourth round of her home Grand Slam in 2025. Her first match back, a little over three weeks ago while representing Great Britain at the BJK Cup, ended in a narrow defeat, after which she won two matches to reach the Beijing third round in her WTA Tour return.
Using a protected injury ranking to enter events, Kartal carried momentum into Wuhan and has not dropped a set in victories over Ukrainian world number 48 Anhelina Kalinina, 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic and two-time major finalist Jasmine Paolini. The sequence of straight-set wins includes her previous-round victory over Bencic.
Kartal meets Ukraine's Elina Svitolina — a four-time Grand Slam semi-finalist — in the Wuhan Open quarter-finals.
