Brentford defeated Tottenham 3-0 in west London on 22 August 2026, the opening match of Brentford’s second season under Keith Andrews. Michael Kayode’s second-half finish completed the victory after first-half goals had put the hosts in control.

Tottenham’s summer spending has been substantial, with the club’s outlay on new signings set to soon surpass £300m in their first summer without Daniel Levy as chair. Sandro Tonali became Spurs’ record signing this summer but, according to the report, “did not look £100m well spent.” Brentford’s most eye-catching addition was Mamadou Sangaré, signed from Lens for £39m, and the hosts benefitted from continuity and recruitment that the article describes as canny.

The opening goal arrived in the 12th minute when Sangaré drove forward on the right, combined with Igor Thiago and received a clever lay-off before cutting the ball back for Keane Lewis-Potter to run in from left-back and score from close range past Antonin Kinsky. Brentford created sustained openings from wide areas and used crosses to unsettle Tottenham’s defence from the start.

Brentford’s early pressure produced several chances: Igor Thiago headed against the bar and Dango Ouattara twice broke through on goal only to take heavy touches that prevented further scoring. Despite dominating the first half, the hosts were only 2-0 ahead at the interval.

Brentford’s midfield overwhelmed Tottenham’s central trio, with Sangaré described as outshining Lucas Bergvall, Conor Gallagher and Tonali; Vitaly Janelt and Mathias Jensen were singled out as excellent alongside Sangaré, while Kevin Schade repeatedly troubled Archie Gray on the left. The performance was credited to Brentford’s organisation under Andrews.

Tottenham fielded three new players in their back four — Andrew Robertson at left-back with Jan Paul van Hecke partnering Marcos Senesi — but were exposed by open spaces that Brentford exploited. The second goal came when Bergvall was timid in a challenge with Jensen, Kinsky failed to clear the initial shot and Janelt reacted quickest to score; there were boos from the away end at half-time. Roberto De Zerbi responded by bringing on Rodrigo Bentancur for Bergvall and introducing Mateus Fernandes for his debut after an £85m move from West Ham.

Early in the second half a routine corner in the 49th minute saw Nathan Collins nod down at the far post, Kinsky save well from Sangaré and Michael Kayode smash the rebound into the roof of the net to make it 3-0. Tottenham’s humiliation was compounded when Bentancur fouled Schade in the area, but Igor Thiago’s subsequent penalty struck the post.

The result left Brentford three goals to the good and Tottenham facing questions over their summer rebuild, while Brentford opened their second season under Keith Andrews with a dominant home victory.
