Owens returned to in-ring action at SummerSlam 2026 after spending approximately 17 months out with a neck injury. His last match before that extended absence was against Sami Zayn at Elimination Chamber on March 1, 2025, and he had been scheduled to face Randy Orton at WrestleMania 41 before the neck issue forced a change; Joe Hendry ultimately answered Orton’s open challenge at WrestleMania and lost to The Viper.

The incident prompting concern occurred at a recent WWE house show where Owens defeated The Miz over the weekend. Footage posted from the event showed Owens limping after a superkick and reportedly selling the effect of the move throughout the match, and reports said he required assistance while making his way backstage, which generated visible fan alarm.

The Wrestling Observer update relayed by Meltzer offers a contrasting assessment, stating Owens "is okay from what we are told" and that there is "no injury" to discuss. The outlet noted that the clarification should be a major relief for fans given Owens’ lengthy layoff prior to his SummerSlam return.

Owens’ comeback had immediately placed him back into WWE’s top-card matches: he was added to a No. 1 contender’s match featuring Gunther, Finn Bálor and Sami Zayn, which he won to earn a shot at CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship. He challenged Punk for the title on the August 21 edition of SmackDown but did not capture the championship, and the following week he again competed in a No. 1 contender’s match against Bálor and Gunther that was disrupted by Zayn’s interference and ended without a clear conclusion.

Meltzer’s reporting indicates there is currently no new injury to add to Owens’ medical history and that he remains available for WWE appearances.
