Khalid Jamil said India were undone by errors in their 4-0 defeat to Brazil at the Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata on 2026-10-04, and described the match as an experience his side must learn from. He conceded individual mistakes, lapses in concentration and a lack of belief were decisive on the scoreboard.

Jamil did not attempt to soften the result, acknowledging the scoreline while stressing the value of the occasion. “I think two or three were soft goals, individual errors. Many mistakes. We made a lot of substitutions, tried everyone, but they were not up to the mark. Maybe they didn’t believe in themselves.” He noted India had periods that made Brazil uncomfortable — the defensive line repeatedly caught Vinicius Jr offside, Sahal Abdul Samad looked confident in possession and Ryan Williams provided a clear attacking outlet — and said the match offered experience that cannot be replicated in training. “We have to play more (such) matches for experience. But from my side, I think the players did not leave any stone unturned in terms of their efforts. I got them to play defensively; they contributed to the build-up and attack.”

India attempted to play through Brazil at times rather than only defend, and produced moments that threatened the visitors; Williams came particularly close in the second half when his effort beat goalkeeper Pedro Morisco but Mauro Jnior cleared off the line. Still, Brazil absorbed India’s better passages and capitalised on openings, with superior quality turning small lapses into decisive goals.

Jamil said the match exposed the level of focus required against elite opponents. “The concentration lacked a bit. Concentration, focus and preparation should be good. Good teams try many things (to get a positive result). If you have tried one or two things, it is not enough; you have to improvise from the first to the 90th minute.” He argued India’s defensive organisation began to crack as intensity and concentration faded.

The goalkeeper’s role featured prominently in the post-match discussion: two of Brazil’s goals followed errors by Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and another mistake before the break almost produced a third, prompting Jamil to replace him at half-time. Jamil defended Gurpreet’s overall standing and rejected singling him out. “He is one of the best goalkeepers India has, and we cannot judge him in just two matches, because the next game is coming up. He will be back again. Sometimes it happens.” He added, “You cannot blame just one player. If you see many mistakes from defenders, allowing him to take a shot.”

Jamil also flagged the substitutes’ impact as an issue after using 11 changes across the game, saying the players who came on failed to change the contest. “If a player comes on, they have to be prepared. Today, there were 11 changes, so we have tried everybody. They have to capitalise on the chance; otherwise, they will not get another chance. The ones who came on tonight weren’t up to the mark. All of them.” He linked that shortfall to mentality, adding: “Maybe they did not have the belief that they could start. Mentally, they have to be strong.”

When asked about positives, Jamil pointed to a handful of performers who carried India’s attacking responsibility. “(Anirudh) Thapa was very good in defensive midfield. (Ryan) Williams and Manvir (Singh) carried the attacking load really well. So did Sahal (Abdul Samad). Especially Williams. He tried his best. (But) we need to be a bit stronger defensively.”

Uruguay are next, another two-time world champion, and they arrived in Kolkata after beating South Korea 4-1. The lessons from the 4-0 defeat will only matter if India can carry them into the next match, particularly when it comes to concentration, defensive discipline and the confidence to attack when opportunities appear.
