Kimi Antonelli clinched the 2026 Formula One World Championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026, becoming the sport's youngest-ever champion. The 20-year-old entered the season without a prior race victory and completed a rapid rise to the title over the year.

Antonelli had admitted to doubting himself after an inconsistent rookie season in which he scored less than half the points total of teammate George Russell. The opening race of 2026 appeared to reinforce the view of Antonelli as Mercedes' No. 2 driver: he crashed heavily in practice in Australia but recovered to finish second behind Russell in the race.

His breakthrough came in China, where Antonelli overtook seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton at the start and then pulled away, leaving Hamilton, Russell and Charles Leclerc to contest second place. Holding back tears, Antonelli became the second-youngest race winner in F1 history and then converted that victory into a five-race winning streak that propelled him to the championship lead while Russell encountered problems.

Canada provided a season highlight in which the Mercedes pair staged a 30-lap duel, trading the lead several times before Russell suffered an engine failure that brought him to a halt and prompted him to slam his fists against the car. The troubles for Russell continued at Monaco, where Antonelli won and Russell was hit by a timing-system fault that wrongly issued penalties for pit-lane speeding.

Antonelli also endured a difficult mid-season run but showed resilience at Silverstone. He arrived at the British Grand Prix with his lead reduced after car problems in Barcelona and following Russell's win in Austria; while chasing Leclerc for the lead at Silverstone he sustained bodywork damage around the left front wheel that made steering difficult, ignored team pleas to pit and retire as he tried to cling to 10th, and ultimately failed to score after receiving a penalty for going off-track in the compromised car.

The Italian Grand Prix at Monza was a personal high: two years after crashing at Monza on his F1 race weekend debut, Antonelli charged from 19th on the grid to take the lead by lap 17 and convert that move into a victory, even eating spaghetti from the trophy afterwards. "For me personally, I'm not even thinking about a fight or a comeback or anything," Russell said after the race; the win was noted in the season for breaking long-standing Monza droughts, with no Italian having won at home in 60 years and no driver having won from that far back on the grid since 1983.

At the Circuit of the Americas the week before Mexico, Antonelli took pole, led past Max Verstappen and Leclerc at the start and managed the race to secure another win, a performance Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called "probably the best race I've seen" from Antonelli. By then Red Bull and Ferrari had largely closed the pace gap to Mercedes and Antonelli's car had become increasingly skittish after recent upgrades; Russell was eighth in that race.

Entering Mexico City, Antonelli needed just two more points to secure the championship and he achieved that target on November 1, 2026, to seal the 2026 Formula One World Championship.
