KKR reported frontrunners to sign Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2027

Reports on August 13, 2026 say Kolkata Knight Riders are the leading contenders to acquire Hardik Pandya from Mumbai Indians in a trade ahead of the Indian Premier League 2027, with coverage suggesting he could be handed the KKR captaincy.

The speculation comes amid a busy IPL off-season and follows Pandya’s 2024 move from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians in an all-cash deal. Pandya captained Mumbai Indians for three full seasons, during which the side failed to qualify for the playoffs on two occasions and did not make a significant impact. Mumbai Indians, described in reports as one of the joint-most successful teams in IPL history, have been reported as struggling to re-establish themselves among the playoff places. During IPL 2026 there were rumours of an ego clash between senior Mumbai Indians players.

Several reports said Chennai Super Kings had been interested in a trade involving some of their players to acquire Pandya, but more recent coverage places Kolkata Knight Riders as the frontrunners to secure him. Ajinkya Rahane, who captained KKR in the last two seasons, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, and KKR are reported to be searching for a captain who can lead the team for a long time.

As per Vaibhav Bhola, Hardik Pandya is all set to join KKR in IPL 2027. He will also take charge of the franchise, as he is the perfect choice for this role. Pandya is described in the reports as an all-rounder known for hard-hitting batting down the order and for bowling a few important overs as a right-arm medium pacer. The coverage states he has already won the IPL trophy five times, including once as captain in his debut season as skipper, when he led the Gujarat Titans to the title in 2022. The reports also note Pandya has played for two IPL teams: Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, and that he won multiple IPL titles with Mumbai Indians.

The three-time champions, KKR, are reported to be keen to sign Pandya and the coverage suggests he could join Gautam Gambhir and Shreyas Iyer on the list of captains who led KKR to IPL titles. The reports caution, however, that no agreement has been finalised.
