KL Rahul embraces Devdutt Padikkal after review overturns out on Day 4 of IND vs SL First Test at Galle

KL Rahul and Devdutt Padikkal shared an emotional on-field celebration at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Day 4 of the India vs Sri Lanka First Test after Padikkal persuaded Rahul to take a DRS review that overturned an on-field out decision.

Yashasvi Jaiswal had been dismissed for a duck earlier in the innings, and Rahul was batting fluently with a half-century partnership already in place with Padikkal when the review moment occurred; in the first innings the pair had compiled a 150-run stand, with Padikkal scoring a century.

The incident came on the final ball of the 11th over from Prabath Jayasuriya, when Rahul was beaten on the inside edge and the ball struck his pads; the umpire raised his finger and Rahul began to leave for the dressing room before Padikkal, at the non-striker’s end, convinced him to call for a review.

The on-field decision was overturned after ball-tracking showed the delivery would have missed the stumps, and Rahul, relieved by the reprieve, celebrated the reversal by embracing Padikkal in a large hug; clips of the exchange were circulated widely on social media.

Rahul continued his innings after the review and had already hit two massive sixes, but he was later dismissed for 35 while attempting a big shot against Jayasuriya, which the report describes as a shimmy down the track followed by a twisting of the bat that led to his dismissal.

India captain Shubman Gill was dismissed soon after; his review, taken in consultation with Padikkal at the other end, showed three reds on the ball-tracking and the decision stood, ending Gill’s innings and concluding a half-century partnership that had helped India recover from the early loss of Jaiswal.
