Tanush Kotian produced career-best bowling figures to set up Mumbai’s 10-wicket victory over Haryana in Mumbai on October 29, 2026, and added a reminder to national selectors about his red-ball credentials.

Despite yet to prove his T20 prowess, Kotian remains caught in the question of whether he is a batting all‑rounder or a spin bowling all‑rounder; while the off-spinner says he values both departments equally, national selectors have often treated him as the latter. “I don’t know about BGT (Border-Gavaskar Trophy), that’s up to the selectors,” Kotian said, adding he was not ruffled over Saransh Jain having been preferred over him for the tour of Sri Lanka earlier in the year.

Kotian recorded a maiden 10-wicket match haul in Mumbai’s emphatic win, registering career-best figures across the two innings. The match figures were the most substantial of his professional career to date and directly contributed to Haryana being dismissed without setting a target.

The workload in the game was unprecedented for Kotian: he had never bowled more than 65 overs in a match before, and bowling in good areas consistently provided significant relief. He described the occasion in his own words: “I was waiting for this opportunity. I was trying to bowl as much as I could. This is the first time I have bowled so much in a match. I am giving the captain confidence that I can bowl long spells and can get wickets as well.”

Kotian had emphasised before the season that he worked on different angles and variations, and he applied those adjustments in the contest by bowling around the wicket regularly. Three of his eight wickets in the match — Parth Vats, Ajith Chahal and Aman Kumar — fell when he was operating from around the wicket.

He also recounted technical guidance received from Nathan Lyon during a brief stint with India’s Test squad in Australia in 2024-25, pointing to adjustments aimed at extracting extra bounce and greater over-spin. “(In Australia), you get extra bounce, so Lyon guided me on how can I bowl more over-spin balls. Also with the run-up and how to use the over-spin. Whatever I learnt there, I am working on that and working with seam positions and variations”.

Kotian’s performance has been presented in the report as another reminder to the national selectors to consider him for the Test squad against Australia early next year.
