Koumas growing with Wales despite 1-0 loss in Lisbon

Portugal beat Wales 1-0 at Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon in the opening game of Portugal's Nations League defence, in a report published on 25 September 2026. Koumas remained on Liverpool's books this season after previous loan spells at Stoke City, Birmingham City and Hull City, a decision Andoni Iraola made that Bellamy noted as significant. "They kept him on at Anfield. You don't get the choice to stay," Bellamy said of Koumas remaining with the Reds. "If they want to keep you, they keep you. It's a difference."

Despite the 1-0 defeat, the match provided further evidence, in Bellamy's view, that Koumas is ready to be the man Wales can depend on and offered the manager reassurance over the young forward's potential.
