Kovai Kings defeat Madurai Panthers by 82 runs to win TNPL-10 final

Kovai Kings beat Madurai Panthers by 82 runs in the TNPL-10 final in Chennai on Friday. Their bowling unit proved decisive in the title decider.

Batters win you games, but bowlers win you tournaments, and Vida Kovai Kings leaned on that maxim to claim the franchise’s third title in five years. M. Shahrukh Khan has taken the side into the final on four occasions since 2022. Despite a mega auction intervening, the franchise retained its core players while adding new faces; that core included skipper M. Shahrukh Khan, top-order batter B. Sachin and spinners M. Siddharth and Jhathavedh Subramanyan, who were also part of the side that last triumphed in 2023.

The final began with a glitzy closing ceremony, and Kovai’s players performed strongly under lights. The team saved their best for the end, having won the last five completed games of the campaign. Shahrukh’s men produced the performance necessary to close out the season.

B. Sachin carried the batting burden in the early stages of the tournament, and contributions from others allowed the side’s bowlers to finish opponents off. Once the supporting batters started contributing, Kovai’s attack was able to bundle out rivals with greater regularity. The bowling depth across the squad was a recurring factor in their results.

Individual awards reflected Kovai’s dominance: Deeban Lingesh finished as the highest wicket-taker and was named the most dependable player, while B. Sachin was the highest run-scorer and was voted Player-of-the-Tournament. The competition also saw the emergence of pacer D. Deepesh, who clocked speeds in excess of 140 kph and is 18 years old; the 18-year-old’s rise should excite TN ahead of the domestic season.

The tournament was staged at only two venues this year, and the surfaces proved batting-friendly, producing the most runs scored in a single edition. That marked a shift from recent criticism that pitches had not been conducive to high-scoring games and had affected batter development in the shortest format.

Since its third SMAT title in 2021, Tamil Nadu’s fortunes in T20 cricket have dipped drastically, and the State team has failed to qualify for the knockouts ever since. It remains to be seen whether performers from this TNPL edition can deliver for the State at the national level.
