Kumkum Mohod wins women's individual recurve gold in Nagoya, secures Olympic quota
Teenager Kumkum Mohod beat South Korea’s Oh Yejin in a shoot-out to claim gold in the women’s individual recurve at the Asian Games in Nagoya on October 3, 2026. The match was tied 5-5 before Kumkum shot a 10 in the shoot-out while Oh scored an 8.
Kumkum reached the semifinals by defeating China’s Jingyi Zhu 6-2, a result that guaranteed her at least a silver and made her the first Indian woman to win an Asian Games medal in the women’s individual recurve event. The four set totals in that match were 28-27, 30-30, 29-29 and 29-28.
In the match against Zhu, Kumkum took the opening set with arrows of 9, 10 and 9. The second set saw both archers shoot three 10s and split the points, the third set was also tied, and Kumkum edged Zhu by one point in the final set to complete the victory.
Earlier in the elimination rounds Kumkum defeated reigning world champion Kang Chaeyoung 6-4 in the quarterfinal. That win was part of her run through the knockout stages en route to the final.
Kumkum had been part of India’s success in other events at the same Games, winning the women’s team recurve gold alongside Ankita Bhakat and Kirti Sharma and taking the mixed pair silver with Dhiraj Bommadevara on October 2.
By reaching the semifinals and beating Jingyi Zhu 6-2, Kumkum secured an Olympic quota place for India. She claimed one of the two quota places available for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and the quota, as per the rules, belongs to the country.
