Kusal and Kamindu Mendis help Sri Lanka reach 100 in 2nd ODI against England

England and Sri Lanka were locked in the second One-Day International, with Sri Lanka passing the 100-run mark while Kusal Mendis and Kamindu Mendis occupied the crease; Jofra Archer returned to the attack (3-0-23-0).

Kamindu Mendis reached 49 and struck a six over deep square leg off Jamie Overton, while Kusal Mendis contributed boundaries including a swept four through square leg and an edged four through short third; the scoreboard read "100 UP FOR SRI LANKA."

Jofra Archer bowled an over that included a wide to Kamindu Mendis and fuller deliveries that Kusal Mendis flicked for singles, with Archer noted in the commentary as "Jofra Archer (3-0-23-0) is back on."

Jamie Overton's spell yielded the big hit from Kamindu and several scoring shots from both Mendis brothers: Kamindu pulled a back-of-a-length delivery for six over deep square leg, while Kusal produced an outside-edge four through short third and other defences and nudges that kept the strike rotating.

Rehan Ahmed was introduced as a leg-spinner and delivered a googly at the stumps that Kusal defended; he also conceded a floated delivery that Kusal swept for four and a short ball that Kamindu dispatched over deep mid-wicket for six.

A diving effort from Jos Buttler produced a good take but it proved to be off the pads, with the ball sticking into his right glove; the commentary recorded the moment as "Brilliant take from Buttler, but that's off the pads" and added "Buttler dives to his right and the ball just sticks into the right glove."

The broadcast called "DRINKS!" and the live commentary said: "It's been pretty even-stevens in the first 17 overs. England should have had another wicket, but Kusal Mendis is riding his luck and scoring at a brisk pace. Kamindu Mendis is playing second fiddle now after that initial burst, and Sri Lanka will hope that these two manage to turn this into a big partnership. England, on the other hand, will be hoping that they can put the squeeze on in this middle phase and pick up a few wickets as well."

Jamie Overton produced extra bounce and movement that troubled Kusal at times, including a stifled appeal for caught behind that was turned down and a delivery described in the commentary as "Overton hits the deck hard, attacking the top of off stump."
