The incident occurred on 14 July in Palo Alto when two vehicles collided; Shanahan was taken to hospital following the crash while the other driver did not require hospitalization. Palo Alto police lieutenant Nicholas Martinez said there was no evidence that either driver was impaired and that both cooperated with police. No one was cited in the collision.

The 49ers announced that Shanahan’s concussion and additional injuries will limit how much he is able to take part during the early sessions of camp. The team framed the restriction as temporary and emphasized that Foerster will oversee the practice work in Shanahan’s stead during the period of reduced involvement. The club gave assurance that Shanahan remains part of the preparation plan despite delegating on-field responsibilities.

San Francisco confirmed the timeline for the announcement coincided with the opening of training camp on Saturday, noting the decision on Shanahan’s day-to-day presence was made after medical evaluation. The coaching staff has begun arranging practice management to reflect Shanahan’s restricted role. Team officials did not provide further medical specifics beyond the concussion and other injuries noted in their statement.

Shanahan’s hospitalization after the crash was limited to his initial treatment following the collision, while the other motorist involved avoided hospital care. Police comments about the investigation indicated cooperation from both drivers and no signs of impairment. The absence of citations in the police account means no legal penalties were issued in connection with the incident.

The 49ers said they expect Shanahan to return to full coaching duties before the regular-season opener. In the meantime, Foerster will guide the team through practices as Shanahan’s participation is monitored and adjusted according to his recovery.
