LaLiga adopts new refereeing rules ahead of 2026-27 season

LaLiga has introduced new refereeing rules ahead of the 2026-27 season, designed to curb time-wasting and bring greater uniformity to officiating. Several of the measures were trialled at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The changes aim to eliminate time-wasting, standardise officiating procedures and address contentious incidents that arose in previous seasons. Some amendments update and clarify rules that were in use in earlier campaigns. LaLiga says the package is drawn from experiments conducted at recent international competition.

All of the regulations form part of a broader set of adjustments authorised by IFAB. Those adjustments were tested at the recent World Cup before being incorporated into domestic application.

Referees at the FIFA World Cup 2026 applied the rules that are now included in LaLiga’s revisions. LaLiga has indicated it will adopt the same measures in its own competition.

The league has stated it will follow the updated officiating protocols during the upcoming 2026-27 season. The adoption is presented as a direct follow-up to the international trials.

A scheduled fixture on 15th August between Deportivo Alavés and Getafe CF is listed in the league calendar for the opening phase of the upcoming season. LaLiga’s new refereeing rules will be in place as the competition proceeds into the 2026-27 campaign.
