Lando Norris secured pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on August 22, 2026, while George Russell claimed the sprint race victory as Formula 1 resumed after the mid-season break.

Norris grabbed pole with a final run that came as rain began to fall, edging Russell by 0.102 seconds; Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, the standings leader, qualified third. Norris said, “A little surprised, honestly, but a decent lap,” and credited McLaren with making small setup changes that gave him confidence: “We had to try something because what we had before wasn't going to be enough,” he added. Norris had won the last race in Hungary on July 26 but had been critical of McLaren after the sprint, saying the team “wasn't competitive at all in slower corners.” Russell said qualifying was “a real joy” to drive and that the plan was to “get in my groove again and try to fight with them tomorrow.”

Russell dominated the sprint after starting from pole, quickly building a gap to Norris and managing the pace to take the win; he described it as “Obviously a great start to the weekend.” Charles Leclerc moved into second with a pass on Norris into the inside of the first corner with six laps remaining but was unable to close on Russell. Norris finished third in the sprint, holding off a late charge from Antonelli, who pulled out of a potential overtaking move on the final lap.

Kimi Antonelli extended his lead in the standings by three more points to 53 as a consequence of the sprint result, while Lewis Hamilton lost ground to Antonelli and had a difficult day, qualifying fifth and finishing seventh in the sprint for Ferrari. The sprint win was Russell's first since the Austrian Grand Prix in June, according to the report.

The session almost turned wet: rain arrived as drivers were heading back to the pits seconds after the sprint finished, with Russell saying, “If there was one more lap it would have been a very, potentially, different end to the race so I'm glad the rain came when it did.” Despite attempts, overtaking remained scarce and the only position changes inside the top 11 were the moves by Leclerc and Antonelli.

With Norris on pole and Russell victorious in the sprint, both drivers have stated ambitions for the main race; Russell's comment that he will “get in my groove again and try to fight with them tomorrow” frames the immediate focus on Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix.
