Leicestershire facing relegation after pitch-related points deduction on day three of County Championship

Leicestershire face the prospect of relegation after the Cricket Regulator upheld a charge relating to the Grace Road pitch, leading to the deduction of the 19 points gained for the win over Glamorgan plus an eight-point penalty on day three of the County Championship on 17 September 2026.

The discipline panel’s decision left Leicestershire bottom of the table, 38 points adrift of the last safe spot, and prompted a club statement saying "the club is reviewing its position and considering all available options". With Hampshire 225 ahead and seven wickets still in hand, Leicestershire now require a victory in what the report described as a must-win match to have any hope of avoiding relegation.

Warwickshire recorded a second successive two-day victory and gained 19 points on the table after bowling Essex out and then chasing 133. Manav Suthar took five for 75 and Chris Woakes three for 33, while Sam Hain’s unbeaten 88 and another 40 runs conceded for the last wicket, following overnight substitutions that brought in Shane Snater and Tom Westley for Essex, were among the key contributions in that game.

At Hove, Sussex held up Nottinghamshire and secured the only Division One batting point of the round, thanks to half-centuries from Tom Clark, Charlie Tear and Tom Price. In another Division One match, Kent need 56 to beat Lancashire to secure promotion points after Zak Crawley’s 84 and Matt Milnes’s 40 not out gave Kent a first-innings lead of 53, Milnes then contributing with the ball as Lancashire were dismissed for 192; Sam Northeast and Tawanda Muyeye guided Kent toward a comfortable position overnight.

Asa Tribe scored his first hundred of the season for Glamorgan on a wicket that had seen 20 wickets fall the previous day, easing Glamorgan’s relegation concerns even before the Leicestershire penalty was announced.

Leicestershire’s deduction and subsequent drop to the foot of the table leaves them 38 points behind safety, and their immediate task is to overturn Hampshire’s 225-run advantage with seven wickets remaining if they are to have any chance of avoiding relegation.
