Bayern Munich defeated Atlético Madrid 2-0 in a Champions League match on 3 November 2026, Lennart Karl scoring in the 54th minute and Konrad Laimer adding a second to seal the victory.

“This stadium brings back bad memories but I hope to be able to replace them with good ones,” Harry Kane had said on Monday night; on his first European outing since winning the Ballon d’Or the England captain was unable to score as Bayern beat Atlético, fellow semi-finalists from last season. The win came after a game in which Bayern were largely superior from the outset, asserting control both physically and in possession.

Bayern reached the break with almost 70% of the possession, much of it concentrated in a ten to fifteen metre strip along the front of Atlético’s penalty area, and they finished the match having racked up nineteen shots. Atlético were gradually pushed deeper and conceded the initiative for long periods, forcing both teams into an exercise in patience during the first half.

Julián Álvarez tested Atlético early, bending a shot just wide after 115 seconds and then attempting a second effort nineteen minutes later from near the centre circle; Manuel Neuer was a long way off his line for that attempt but the shot, taken from around seventy yards, drifted wide. Atlético offered few sustained openings: a Marc Pubill cross almost reached Alexander Sørloth at the far post but the Norwegian could not reach it, and on one occasion he momentarily escaped Dayot Upamecano.

Harry Kane was central to many of Bayern’s attacks, teeing up an opportunity for Karl who shot over and producing two sights of goal himself — a volley from seven yards that flew wide and a similar effort that was superbly blocked by David Hancko after Laimer’s cross reached Alphonso Davis at the far post. Josip Stanisic also put one chance wide and Laimer scuffed another effort as Atlético largely held Bayern at the gates during the opening period.

The match changed shortly after the restart: Jan Oblak made his first save of the game from Joshua Kimmich about thirty seconds after the break, and a Tom Bischof effort was deflected to Robin Le Normand and Marc Pubill, neither of whom took responsibility; Karl collected the loose ball and smuggled it past Oblak to make it 1-0. Diego Simeone responded with almost immediate substitutions — Lee Kang-in, Koke and Ademola Lookman — and Atlético briefly became more active, Álvarez producing a clever ball on 65 minutes that allowed Marcos Llorente to turn inside the area and draw a save from Neuer.

Bayern extended their lead after a sequence in which Dayot Upamecano struck a deflected shot that hit the bar, Alphonso Davis robbed a tiring Llorente, and Kane clipped a pass to Laimer on the right; Laimer waited as Hancko slid across to block a feigned shot and then smashed the ball into the top of the net. There remained time for one more Kane effort — his fifth of the match — which went over the bar, but the score finished 2-0.

Stadiums across Europe fell silent before kickoff in memory of the Tenerife player Jesus de Miguel, who died earlier on Tuesday after a collision on the pitch in the Spanish second division match against Andorra on Monday. Elsewhere in the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain set a record by scoring four goals inside 17 minutes en route to a 6-0 win over Villarreal — João Neves, Desiré Doué, Senny Mayulu and Fabián Ruiz all scored in the early blitz, Ruiz struck again soon after the interval and substitute David Boly completed the scoring as PSG extended their 100% Champions League start and moved three points clear at the top of the table; Inter beat Feyenoord 3-0 at De Kuip through goals from Yann Bisseck, Pio Esposito and Piotr Zielinski, Sporting Lisbon won 1-0 against Shakhtar Donetsk under reserve coach Tiago Fernandes with Issa Doumbia scoring, Aleksey Batrakov scored twice in a 2-0 Galatasaray win over Stuttgart, Lask beat Slovan Bratislava 4-0 and Bodø/Glimt drew 0-0 with Lille.
