Lewis Hall says Jaissle talks convinced him to reject Manchester United and sign new Newcastle deal

Newcastle United and England full-back Lewis Hall said on 2026-09-22 that he turned down interest from Manchester United and signed a new contract with Newcastle after discussions with new manager Matthias Jaissle.

Hall, 22, was linked with Manchester United when they sought a left-back in the summer but no move materialised because Newcastle made clear they did not want to lose him; he has also expressed a desire to remain on Tyneside and said he plans to stay at the club for many more years.

“No, honestly, it didn’t (affect me),” Hall said of the links to other clubs. “I guess whenever you’re linked to another team, you know that you’re doing something right. I guess it’s just a credit to your own performances and how you are as a player, how you are as a person.”

Hall credited conversations with Jaissle for his decision to commit to Newcastle. “I took that as a positive, but at the same time, I knew how much I love playing here and I knew that since the manager came in, I knew the ambitions and what we wanted to achieve,” he said. “After not many conversations, not many training sessions, I knew that the manager (Matthias Jaissle) was going to be really good for this club and I knew that as a team, bringing in new players and improving the squad was really important and as soon as we did that, it was a no-brainer really to sign.”

On the field, Hall scored in Newcastle’s 2-1 win over Hull City at the weekend, a result the article described as helping move the club to ninth in the Premier League amid what it called a rough start to the season.

Hall was also called back up to the England team after missing out on the FIFA World Cup 2026.
