Detroit Lions linebacker Jack Campbell was taken to hospital to be treated for a neck injury after being hurt during an NFL game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. He left the field on a stretcher and cart following the incident.

Campbell's head was struck while he tackled tight end TJ Hockenson in the third quarter and he was face down on the pitch when medical officials rushed to his side. Medical staff placed him on a stretcher and he was removed from the field on a cart to a round of applause.

Team-mates and most of the Lions coaching staff surrounded Campbell while he received attention and several players appeared visibly distressed. The Lions confirmed he was transported to hospital.

The 26-year-old, who is not related to head coach Dan Campbell, was drafted by the Lions with the number 18 overall pick in 2023. He signed a contract extension in May of this year through to the 2030 season and was an All-Pro selection last season after becoming the first NFL player in seven years to record 150-plus tackles and at least five sacks and three forced fumbles.

Detroit won Sunday's game 19-15, and Campbell's team-mates DJ Wonnum and Brian Branch both suffered concussions. "Thoughts and prayers are with Jack and his family. He's being taken care of, we don't have any new information," said Lions head coach Dan Campbell.
