Lions defeated Ospreys 35-19 at Ellis Park in a United Rugby Championship match on Saturday, with Ospreys wing Keelan Giles captaining his side for the first time.

Ospreys began the 2026-27 campaign having earned a four-try bonus point in a defeat by Sharks in Durban, but they left Johannesburg without any reward from Saturday's fixture. The visitors had beaten the Lions at altitude in Johannesburg during the 2023-24 Challenge Cup, yet the hosts entered the match in strong home form after losing just once at Ellis Park last season, to Bulls, and starting this campaign with a win over Leinster.

The first half was tight and scrappy, the only score in the opening quarter coming from a Chris Smith penalty as the Lions took an early lead. Erich Cronje crossed in the 28th minute to put the hosts ahead, but Ospreys responded from turnover ball when Keiran Williams cut a line and finished following an offload from Evardi Boshoff, then added a second try at the end of the half when hooker Efan Daniel finished from a driving line-out to leave Ospreys 12-10 ahead at the break.

Set-piece dominance helped the Lions turn the game after half-time, with PJ Botha and replacement Morne Brandon scoring through driving mauls soon after the restart. Boeta Chamberlain’s try in the 57th minute secured the four-try bonus for the home side, and Kelly Mpeku crossed twice down the right to extend the Lions' advantage before Ross Moriarty’s late try prevented a scoreless second half for the Ospreys.

Fly-half Chris Smith struggled with the boot, converting one try and adding a penalty, and that single conversion and penalty were noted as limiting the margin of victory for the Lions. Wales fly-half Dan Edwards was yellow-carded for a high tackle on the hour, leaving Ospreys a man short during a decisive period of the second half.
