Lovlina Borgohain reaches Asian Games 75kg semifinals, secures a medal

Lovlina Borgohain advanced to the semifinals of the women’s 75kg boxing at the 2026 Asian Games in Nishio, Japan on Monday, September 28, 2026, beating South Korea’s Seong Suyeon 5-0 in a quarterfinal and thereby guaranteeing herself at least a bronze medal.

Competing in her first bout of the tournament, the Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist added to her continental pedigree by reaching the last four. Borgohain had won silver at the previous Asian Games in Hangzhou in 2023 and took silver at the Commonwealth Games last month. The Assam boxer has now secured medals at the World Championships, Asian Games, Asian Championships and the World Cup.

Borgohain opened the contest on the front foot, starting with a 1-2 combination. She used her jab and cross to unsettle Seong, who struggled to find clean connections despite a slight height advantage. The early pressure set the tone for the Indian’s approach.

In the second round Borgohain continued to land clean combinations of crosses and hooks. She remained active with her offense but was briefly exposed in defence as Seong launched a series of punches. The exchange left the round closely contested on the cards.

The final round saw Seong make better use of her reach and enjoy improved range with her height advantage. Borgohain relied on quicker movement and greater agility to close distance, and her punches were cleaner and more effective throughout the stanza. The unanimous 5-0 decision reflected the judges’ scoring across the contest.

With the victory, Borgohain joins Parveen Hooda (65kg), Ankush Panghal (80kg) and Narender Berwal (+90kg), who all progressed to the semifinals on Sunday.

She will meet reigning 70kg world champion Natalya Bogdanova of Kazakhstan in the last four stage, while later in the day Priya Ghanghas (60kg) and Kapil Pokhariya (90kg) will vie for a semifinal spot in their respective weight categories.
