Luis de la Fuente signs Spain contract extension through 2032

Luis de la Fuente has agreed a contract extension that will keep him as Spain head coach until 2032, RFEF president Rafael Louzan said on Wednesday at the World Football Summit in Madrid. The 65-year-old's previous deal was due to expire in 2028, and the new agreement will extend his tenure to a decade.

De la Fuente succeeded Luis Enrique as Spain head coach in December 2022 after Spain's last-16 exit at that year's World Cup and had spent nine years working in Spain's youth coaching setup prior to that. He began his coaching career in Spain's lower leagues and led youth sides to a European Under-19 Championship in 2015, a European Under-21 Championship in 2019 and a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. His appointment to the senior role followed a long association with the national programme.

Since taking charge of the senior team, Spain have lost just twice in 41 competitive matches and have collected three trophies under De la Fuente, including the 2022-23 Uefa Nations League. They finished as runners-up to Portugal in 2024-25. Those results formed part of the case for extending his contract.

De la Fuente guided Spain to their fourth European Championship title in 2024 before guiding them to global honours this summer, with Spain beating Argentina 1-0 in extra time to lift their second men's World Cup crown in July. Two years earlier Spain had defeated England 2-1 to win the European Championship, a sequence of results that preceded the World Cup success.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan set out the federation's view on De la Fuente's position at the summit, saying: "His results speak for themselves, as does his work," and adding, "The public loves and admires him. I offered him an extension because he wasn't among the top 10 in terms of financial conditions. Now he will be. "We're finalising the agreement so he can remain for several more years. He's been with us 14 years, and I want him to be able to finish his career here."

The extension positions De la Fuente to remain in charge for Spain's World Cup defence on home soil in 2030. Spain will co-host the 24th edition of the men's World Cup alongside Portugal and Morocco, with a handful of matches scheduled for Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay as part of the competition's 100th anniversary celebrations.

Spain are next in action on 26 September, facing England at Wembley in their 2026-27 Nations League opener.
