Magnus Carlsen won the Chess title at the Esports World Cup 2026 on August 23, 2026, defeating AG.AL’s Denis Lazavik in the grand final in two sets. The Team Liquid grandmaster completed the tournament without losing a single game to claim his second consecutive EWC trophy.

Carlsen, who has never lost a match at the EWC, reinforced himself as the world’s greatest Chess player and finished the event undefeated across both the group stage and the playoffs. Denis Lazavik managed to draw four games with Carlsen in the final but was unable to secure a victory. The Norwegian’s perfect run this year improved on his 2025 performance, in which he lost three individual games.

In the semifinals Carlsen defeated Team Falcon’s Alireza Firouzja, who had been his opponent in the EWC 2025 grand final. Carlsen’s final opponent was 19-year-old Denis Lazavik representing AG.AL. Lazavik reached the final after losing only once in his tournament run — to Team Falcon’s Hikaru Nakamura in the group stage — and then beating Nakamura in the semifinals to earn his shot at Carlsen.

“I have played against Denis online many times before, and played more riskily, and have been punished for that,” said Magnus Carlsen following his victory. “I tried to not give him too many obvious positional advantages, and to take whatever chances I could find.”

Ahead of the grand final, Team Falcons pair Hikaru Nakamura and Alireza Firouzja contested the third-place match over a six-game set. By game four Nakamura had the upper hand and closed out the series, beating Firouzja 3-1, with Falcons securing third place and 500 Club Championship points.

Denis Lazavik finished as the runner-up, while Hikaru Nakamura took third place after defeating teammate Alireza Firouzja. Carlsen’s unbeaten performance at Esports World Cup 2026 leaves him as the back-to-back Esports World Cup Chess Champion.
