Mallorca goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar hospitalised after canteen structure collapse

Mallorca goalkeeper Iván Cuéllar suffered a serious head injury on Monday when a large structure in the canteen at the club’s training ground, the Ciutat Esportiva Antonio Asensio (Son Bibiloni), collapsed on him, the club said. He was taken to hospital and is under medical observation.

The incident occurred before the team’s scheduled training session at Son Bibiloni, the club added in a statement. “This morning, Ivan ’Pichu’ Cuéllar suffered a serious head injury after a large ​structure, which formed part of the decor in the dining room at the Ciutat Esportiva collapsed,” the club said in a statement. “The ⁠player has been taken to hospital for treatment ​and ​will remain under observation ​for the next 24 hours.”

Mallorca said the 42-year-old keeper was recovering well while doctors monitored his condition and ruled out further complications. The club confirmed Cuéllar had been taken to hospital on Monday for treatment and would remain under observation for the following 24-hour period.

The injury leaves manager Luis García short of backup options in goal, with Lucas Bergström currently away on international duty with Finland. Arnau Tenas is the only first-team goalkeeper available to García so far this season.

Tenas replaced Bergström in the pecking order this term and his error led to the only goal in Mallorca’s 1-0 home defeat to Almería on Sunday. That defeat left Mallorca on 13 points after seven games.

Mallorca and their upcoming opponents, Girona, were both relegated from La Liga last season and sit level on 13 points after seven matches this term. The Palma-based side are preparing for Sunday’s Spanish second division match at Girona.
