Manchester United said in a filing to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday that they had borrowed another £90m since 30 June, taking reported overall debt to £1.15bn and confirming they spent £191.7m on new players this summer.

The club also noted that Old Trafford is facing maintenance issues. United recorded the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea on 13 July, Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on 14 July and Carlos Baleba from Brighton on 25 August; the fees the club previously stated for those three transfers totalled £153m, and the club said it is not clear where the additional sum has been spent. The club have been approached for comment.

The additional borrowing was disclosed in a more detailed filing to the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday, following the release of their 2025-26 accounts to 30 June on Wednesday. The filing showed the club’s overall debt remained above £1bn despite major cost-cutting measures implemented by Sir Jim Ratcliffe since he became minority owner in 2024.

United confirmed three further drawdowns from its revolving credit limit on 29 July, 31 July and 28 August that totalled £120m, and that it repaid £30m on 21 September. Those movements were included in the more detailed NYSE filing.

The club’s reported total debt of £1.15bn is made up of historic debt of £578m, £200m outstanding on its revolving credit facility and £375m in outstanding transfer fees. The filing set out those component figures.

United said the £375m now listed as outstanding transfer fees is a £72m reduction from the £447m reported in their 2024-25 accounts. The filing also detailed payment timing, with £104.8m due between one and two years, £51.9m due between two and five years and the remainder due within the next 12 months, and the club said payments for their most recent transfers "are due within the next five years".

The disclosures about the extra borrowing and the breakdown of outstanding payments were made public as part of the club’s submission to the New York Stock Exchange following the publication of their 2025-26 accounts to 30 June.
