Manchester City begin 2026-27 WSL defence with Shaw retained and new signings Mead, Charles
Manchester City will begin their 2026-27 Women's Super League title defence at the Joie Stadium against promoted Birmingham City, according to a preview published on 31 August 2026. The club enter the season as reigning champions after ending a 10-year wait for the title.

Khadija "Bunny" Shaw, the WSL's top scorer and best player for 2025-26, signed a new four-year contract in May rather than leaving on a free transfer, a move the preview says could be crucial to City maintaining momentum. Retaining Shaw removes the prospect of losing their leading forward and preserves a key component of the side that won last season.
Andrée Jeglertz, whose first season in charge produced a league and cup double, is described as a calm, assured presence on the touchline and a coach who has avoided controversy in press conferences. His CV includes a 2004 European title with Swedish club Umeå and he arrived in Manchester after what the preview calls a relatively uninspiring spell in charge of Denmark women. Jeglertz said: "Our biggest challenge this year is to continue winning and, at the same, compete in other competitions and also want to win those. Winning in one year is one thing, but being able to win in the next year, that is even tougher. Of course we can do that [compete on multiple fronts] and we have good enough players to be able to play with one starting XI on Saturday and do a couple of changes on Wednesday and still win. That was our biggest challenge last year – we had too many good players that were not playing enough games, so this year we will have the possibility to explore the whole squad. Each player will be more important than they’ve ever been for the club" – Jeglertz speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live.
Off the pitch, the club is owned by City Football Group and is led in the women's setup by managing director Charlotte O'Neill and director of football Therese Sjögren. Manchester City have invested £10m in a new women's team building at the training centre, with features ranging from underwater treadmills to a barista-style coffee machine, and the facility is described as tailored towards maximising performance for female athletes; previously the women sometimes had to share a gym with City’s boys' academy.
Beth Mead arrived on a free transfer after nine years at Arsenal and has signed a three-year contract; the preview notes she is 31, was the Golden Boot winner and player of the tournament at the 2022 European Championship, is the all-time leading assist provider in the WSL, and has 81 caps, with the observation that she "will want to be part of any Lionesses squad at next summer’s World Cup." Manchester City will play two home league fixtures at the Etihad Stadium this season, hosting Arsenal on 4 October and Manchester United on 14 February, with their first high-profile meeting against Arsenal scheduled at the start of October.
