Manchester United recovered from two two-goal deficits to earn a 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, November 8. The result followed United’s midweek Champions League win over AS Roma and provided temporary relief for manager Michael Carrick as his substitutions influenced the late stages of the match.

Some supporters began to leave Old Trafford before rushing back as the game changed momentum; Villa led 2-0 inside the first four minutes after Alysson opened the scoring right after kickoff with a shot through the legs of Senne Lammens and Nicholas Jackson converted after Lammens failed to clear Alysson’s follow-up. United pulled a goal back when Matheus Cunha was brought down by Kamara and Bruno Fernandes converted the resulting penalty in the 16th minute to make it 2-1.

Zion Suzuki produced several notable saves to keep Villa ahead until Youri Tielmans levelled the score in the 44th minute to make it 2-2. United’s defence was described as weakened by the exit of Harry Maguire with an injury, and Villa’s response after halftime exploited that situation when Ayden Heaven came on.

Diogo Dalot conceded a penalty after struggling against Alysson and John McGinn scored from the spot in the 48th minute to restore Villa’s lead. Five minutes later a McGinn free kick caused a scramble in United’s box; Leny Yoro’s clearance struck the bar and fell to Leon Goretzka, who scored his first goal for Villa to make it 4-2.

Carrick introduced Patrick Dorgu and Mason Mount for Dalot and Tielmans, with Shea Lacey and Joshua Zirkzee also brought on as United pushed for a response. In stoppage time, with six minutes signalled, Dorgu’s run and pass found Zirkzee to reduce the deficit to 3-4, and a corner in the fifth minute of added time saw Senne Lammens join the attack.

Zion Suzuki failed to clear the corner properly, the ball fell to Dorgu and he guided it into the net to level the match at 4-4; United had a late opportunity from Mount’s pass but it did not find a team-mate. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery remained without a win at Old Trafford after the draw.

The draw left Manchester United in 18th place with one win from their first 10 games.
