Manchester United rally to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford in Matchday 2

Manchester United came from behind to beat Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford on Sunday night in a Matchday 2 fixture of the Premier League 2026-27 season, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick to spearhead the comeback.

Ipswich started the game brightly and forced two important saves from goalkeeper Senne Lammens, who denied Julio Enciso in a one-on-one and tipped Daizen Maeda’s effort behind in the 23rd minute. The visitors took the lead in the 29th minute when Abdul Fatawu’s cross was converted by Leif Davis. Minutes after the deflected goal, Greaves brought down Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area and the referee awarded a spot-kick; Fernandes converted from 12 yards, sending Scherpen the wrong way to make it 3-1 (61'). Fernandes completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute when a rebound from a Mbeumo effort fell to him and he finished from close range.

Fernandes added an assist in the 82nd minute, setting up Cameroonian striker Bryan Mbeumo whose chipped finish crossed the line to extend the lead and seal a commanding scoreline. Ipswich reduced the deficit in added time when Chuba Akpom scored in the 91st minute, but the late strike proved only a consolation. Jacob Greaves’ involvement — the own goal deflection and the foul that led to the penalty — was a decisive factor in the turning of the game in United’s favour.
