Manolo Marquez’s future at Mumbai City FC is increasingly uncertain after the opening three matches of the 2026-27 Indian Super League season, a period that has exposed injuries, questions over recruitment and a 1-2 defeat to Churchill Brothers.

Marquez joined Mumbai following three seasons at FC Goa and familiarity with director of football Sujay Sharma from their time at Hyderabad FC; his move followed his view that Goa had reached a point where a change of players or cycle was required. The club’s financial situation has shifted since the departure of the City Football Group, and Mumbai had approximately 45 days — nearly seven weeks — to prepare for the new campaign.

Marquez publicly criticised the club’s pre-season after the Churchill Brothers loss, saying: "It was an unrealistic pre-season. We played against very, very, very, very weak teams, and then you arrive at your first game against an ISL team. You are bound to struggle." He also flagged a perceived foul on Brandon Fernandes before Churchill’s second goal and said: "Probably, there was a foul on Brandon before the second goal. But the players didn’t protest. I would have liked to see them show some character and stand up for each other. The lack of character in this team is very, very clear." He accepted personal responsibility for failing to extract the best from his players: "I’m disappointed with myself because I couldn’t bring out the good things in these players. But the lack of character from the team, not even protesting after the foul that led to the second goal, is something that disappoints me. A team without character is difficult to get things out of."

Mumbai’s recruitment has reflected its changed financial reality: the club signed Carlos Delgado, Lazar Cirkovic and Wilmar Jordan Gil, and entered the season with only five foreign players, leaving one slot unfilled. The club’s signings were described as capable, but Marquez has emphasised the absence of a specialist striker as a critical shortcoming for squad balance and depth compared with the City Football Group era.

The Islanders retain a strong Indian core in Brandon Fernandes and Vikram Pratap Singh, and have players with national-team experience such as Akash Mishra and Valpuia, alongside younger prospects including Noufal, Puipuia and Ajsal and development options Yuvraj Kadam, Hridaya Jain and Supratim Das. Injuries to Wilmar Jordan Gil, Leandro Otormin, Vikram Pratap Singh and Brandon Fernandes have reduced Mumbai’s attacking options and compounded the squad’s depth issue, with Otormin suffering another setback in the draw with Kerala Blasters.

Marquez also placed Mumbai’s situation in the wider context of changes across Indian football, saying: "Due to the circumstances in Indian football, many teams are completely different now. Goa, Chennaiyin and even Mumbai have changed. This is a good team, but it is not the same team that was fighting for titles two seasons ago." He declined to explain positional changes involving players such as Noufal and Brandon before the draw against Punjab FC.

After the draw with Kerala Blasters Marquez reiterated the squad’s shortcomings: "Great effort, great commitment. You don’t need to be an expert to see what is missing in this team." He explicitly linked Mumbai’s immediate objectives to transfer business, stating: "I have a feeling that if we sign a striker, we will finish in the top six, and that would be my mission. If we don’t sign anyone, then it will be difficult." Marquez has also removed the Instagram post announcing his arrival at Mumbai City FC, a move the club has not confirmed as signalling any decision on his future.

Mumbai must now choose whether to sign reinforcements or depend on the existing senior players and younger talents while managing the injury list; Marquez has made clear that acquiring a striker is central to his stated mission of finishing in the top six, and for now his departure from the club remains unconfirmed.
