Martin O'Neill remains in hospital after 'small procedure'

Martin O'Neill remains in hospital after undergoing a "small procedure", the club announced, having been in the dugout for Celtic's 1-0 Premiership win over Dundee on Monday.

There are no details about the nature of the operation, and the 74-year-old manager signed a one-year deal in June to become Celtic's permanent manager after two interim spells last season that ended with the club completing a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double.

Celtic posted on social media: "In response to speculation, we can confirm that Martin O'Neill has undergone a small procedure in hospital," Celtic posted on social media. "We would envisage Martin being released from hospital in the next day or two and on behalf of Martin, we would like to thank supporters for their kind wishes. "We would ask that the privacy of Martin and his family is respected."

Having not managed since a spell with Nottingham Forest in 2019, O'Neill made a surprise return to Celtic last October, 20 years after his first spell in charge, following Brendan Rodgers' acrimonious resignation.

He initially handed the reins to Wilfried Nancy in December; Nancy was sacked after eight games, which led to O'Neill resuming managerial duties at the club.

After securing what the club described as his eighth and ninth major honours with Celtic, O'Neill agreed to take the role on a full-time basis, signing a one-year contract with the option of a further year following discussions with Celtic's major shareholder Dermot Desmond.

The club has said it expects O'Neill to be released from hospital "in the next day or two" and has asked for privacy for him and his family.
