Mateta's contract dispute forces Palace to weigh transfer options

There was pride at Palace when Mateta fulfilled his dream of representing France after being called up to the France squad for the first time in 2026 before going to the World Cup. Sources suggest some people within the club feel sympathy for Mateta given the contractual dispute and the advice he may have received, while supporters on social media have been far less compassionate.
Employment lawyer Libby Payne said: "It is possible to argue that the terms of the option are inherently unfair and therefore void, although the threshold for this is high and such challenges rarely succeed." With just eight days left of the transfer window, that legal backdrop frames Palace's immediate options as rival clubs are said to be showing interest, with Aston Villa among those credited with admiration amid uncertainty over Ollie Watkins' future at the midlands club.
Mateta having 10 months remaining matters because this window is Palace's final chance to recoup a transfer fee before he would be eligible to sign a Bosman pre-contract with an overseas club in January. There is a view among some at the club that they should look to sever ties in the coming days, but Mateta being less than 12 months away from a free transfer — which would most likely be more financially lucrative for him than leaving for a fee this month — helps explain why he may not be rushing to force a move.
Palace have attempted to renew Mateta's contract over the past 12 months without success, and while the option of an extension cannot be completely discounted it seems inconceivable he would U-turn now given the lengths he has gone to to challenge his current deal. Palace are likely to, at the very least, listen to offers for Mateta, who — by his actions — has indicated he views his future away from Selhurst Park.
