Brendon McCullum said he persuaded Kevin Pietersen to rejoin England's coaching staff as a mentor for the upcoming white-ball matches, in a Times of India report published on 15 September 2026.
"He thought I was joking," McCullum said, describing the phone call that brought Pietersen back. He added that the decision to bring Pietersen back was entirely his initiative.
McCullum said Pietersen's past criticisms did not deter him. He said he expects Pietersen's experience and distinctive insights will aid the team, and players are reportedly eager to benefit from his expertise and contributions.
