McCullum urges Kevin Pietersen to challenge him as England prepare for Sri Lanka T20s

England's white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum said on 15 September 2026 that he wants newly appointed mentor Kevin Pietersen to challenge him with ideas as the team prepares for the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka. Pietersen joined England's coaching staff last week and has begun his role ahead of the series.

McCullum told reporters on Monday he does not want Pietersen confined to a single coaching niche and wants him to contribute across the environment. "He's obviously got an incredible pedigree as a player and a lot of guys grew up idolising Kev. He's brought a ton of energy to the setup within the last 24 hours," McCullum said. "I've mentioned to him that I don't want him to be buried in one specific skillset. I want him to look across the environment and challenge me privately around ways we can improve or things we can do differently."

Pietersen, who won the Ashes and the T20 World Cup during his England career, returns to the international setup in a mentoring capacity at an important stage for the white-ball side. McCullum said he believes Pietersen's stature and playing experience can add value to the group, particularly with England preparing for a major global tournament.

The appointment coincides with McCullum's effort to establish standards within England's white-ball programme; the New Zealander was removed as England's Test coach in July and his tenure had been accompanied by several off-field controversies involving high-profile players. McCullum has since emphasized that professional standards will be a key factor in selection decisions.

That stance was underlined by the decision to leave fast bowler Brydon Carse out of England's Test squad during their recent 3-0 series victory over Pakistan following an incident outside a nightclub. "There is a lot of talent around - if you're not prepared to do that, there are other guys who will be given those opportunities," he said.

On Carse specifically, McCullum acknowledged the 30-year-old's ability and his performances for England but said the fast bowler needs to address the issue before returning to contention. "As far as Carsey is concerned, it's important for Carsey he gets his house in order. We know he's an excellent cricketer who has done well when he's played for England," McCullum added.

England begin their white-ball campaign against Sri Lanka with the first of three T20Is on Tuesday; the teams will then meet in a three-match ODI series as England continue their preparations for next year's World Cup.
