Medvedev beats Tsitsipas to reach Shanghai Masters quarterfinals

Daniil Medvedev defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters in Shanghai, China on October 14, 2026, advancing to the tournament quarterfinals with a 6-4, 7-5 victory. The win came for the fifth-seeded Medvedev in straight sets.
The victory made Medvedev only the fourth player — after Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray — to reach the Shanghai last eight in three consecutive years. There have been verbal flare-ups in previous meetings between Medvedev and Tsitsipas, including in the Australian Open semifinals in 2022. The match was played in the men’s singles fourth round at the Shanghai Masters; a photo of Medvedev returning a ball to Tsitsipas was credited to AP.
Earlier on the same day Rafael Jodar reached the quarterfinals after recovering from a set down for the third straight match. The 20-year-old Spaniard beat Botic van de Zandschulp 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-2. Jodar had previously come from behind to beat Thiago Agustin Tirante in the second round and Jiri Lehecka in the third round.
Next up at the Masters 1000 event for the 12th-seeded Jodar is Casper Ruud. Ruud progressed when fourth-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime retired from their match with a suspected knee injury while trailing 5-2 in the first set. That retirement handed Ruud the place in the quarterfinal clash with Jodar.
Tommy Paul is scheduled to play Zizou Bergs later for the right to play Medvedev in the quarterfinals. Bergs recorded a victory over Carlos Alcaraz on Monday. The winner of Paul versus Bergs will meet Medvedev in the next round.
The quarterfinals lineup in the top half of the draw was finalised on Tuesday (October 13, 2026), with top-seeded Alexander Zverev drawn against Alex de Minaur and Arthur Gea set to play Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
Medvedev will await the winner of Tommy Paul and Zizou Bergs in the quarterfinals, while the top half of the draw features the Zverev–de Minaur and Arthur Gea–Alejandro Davidovich Fokina quarterfinal ties.
