4A Games unveiled a new gameplay trailer for Metro 2039 at Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live on August 26, 2026, showcasing darker narrative elements and intensified combat systems.

The developer described the upcoming sequel as the most ambitious entry in the Metro franchise and confirmed players will assume the role of a new protagonist known as The Wanderer, who explores dangerous underground tunnels and a radioactive surface while searching for answers.

The trailer introduced a mysterious Novoreich faction whose leader, Hunter, seeks to eliminate all enemies, and it presented a darker, more psychological storyline than previous Metro titles as the enigmatic Dark Ones appear to communicate directly with The Wanderer, calling into question what is real.

Gameplay footage highlighted survival and environmental interaction systems, including the use of a blowtorch to cut through sealed doors and the discovery of hidden blueprints during exploration that aid progression.

Combat sequences featured brutal encounters with mutants on the surface that can catch survivors off guard, underlining a heightened threat level for surface expeditions and more intense melee and ranged confrontations.

The developers demonstrated weapon customization and upgrading through an in-game customization system, describing expanded options for modifying arsenals alongside enhanced exploration mechanics.

4A Games has scheduled Metro 2039 to launch in February 2027 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC, and the publisher also announced a collector’s edition that includes a full-sized wearable Spartan helmet showcased during Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live.
