Micky van de Ven close to agreeing new five-year deal with Tottenham Hotspur

Micky van de Ven is close to agreeing a new five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, the BBC understands on 6 August 2026. The Netherlands international centre‑back, 25, moved to Spurs from Wolfsburg in 2023 and is reported to be nearing a renewal.
Van de Ven signed for Tottenham in 2023 on a six-year contract that runs until 2029 after leaving Wolfsburg. He had been weighing his future in north London prior to the appointment of Roberto de Zerbi in March. The arrival of the Italian manager, who helped keep Spurs in the Premier League, has been described as crucial to Van de Ven’s decision to seek new terms.
Speaking to BBC Sport in July, Van de Ven commented on changes at the club and its direction. "It's really good that you can see the club has made some changes," he said. "You can see the club has a new ambition. It's something that's really important for players who have been here for a long time."
Tottenham endured a difficult period on the field with back-to-back 17th-place finishes in the Premier League and a battle to remain in the top flight that went to the final day of the 2025-2026 campaign. The club also experienced a turbulent nine months that featured three different managers during that stretch.
Van de Ven has expressed optimism about the new coaching regime and his own future at the club. He said he is "looking forward to a brighter future under De Zerbi" and added: "It's going to be different compared to the manager we had last season."
On the style of play he expects under De Zerbi, Van de Ven said: "It's also going to be more enjoyable for people to watch because we'll be playing offensive football." He added: "It is something we needed because everybody was a little bit down."
BBC Sport understands talks over a five-year deal between Van de Ven and Tottenham are advanced, with the defender having already made clear his willingness to commit under the current management. Further confirmation of any new contract would follow from official club announcement.
