Miguel Freckleton, the 23-year-old Bristol-born defender, has reached the Champions League with Austrian champions LASK after joining the club in the summer, BBC Sport reports on 3 November 2026. He made his European debut when he came on in extra time as LASK overturned a 4-0 deficit against Celtic to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

Freckleton’s rise covers non-league football to European competition in around two and a half years, having been a National League winner with Chesterfield in 2024 before spending a trophy-winning season at St Mirren. He was on the books at Bristol Rovers until age 14, left amid reported interest from Wolves and Stoke City, carried a £50,000 compensation fee as a teenager and later spent time at the Bristol Inner City Academy and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College. As a youth he played a handful of matches for Mangotsfield United in the seventh tier and was praised by coach Matt Curry for his height and pace.

Freckleton returned to the professional game when he joined Sheffield United in December 2021 but did not break into their first team across three and a half years. During that time he had four loan spells: Wealdstone, Yeovil Town, Chesterfield and a full season in League Two with Swindon Town; Chesterfield’s promotion from the National League came during the third of those loans in 2023-24. He recalled a curtailed loan at Wealdstone — a part-time club — which involved long drives to train for both clubs, and a missed registration that prevented him featuring in a potential FA Cup tie: "But my papers didn't come through. I was very annoyed. I was doing so well. But that's football," he says.

When Sheffield United replaced Chris Wilder with Ruben Selles in June 2025, Freckleton says Selles told him he was not in his plans, prompting a search for regular football. St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson persuaded him to move north; Freckleton described his first match for the club as a 1-0 loss to Celtic in front of 65,000 fans and said the experience convinced him he wanted to be part of that environment. St Mirren reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals and won the Scottish League Cup, beating Celtic 3-1 in the final last December, a victory Freckleton called: "definitely the best feeling I've had on the pitch."

After joining LASK in July, Freckleton has made seven appearances for the Austrian champions and was part of the squad that completed the comeback against Celtic in the Champions League play-off. He outlined his reaction to LASK’s group-stage draw, which includes fixtures against AEK Athens, Liverpool, Sporting, Slovan Bratislava, Bodo/Glimt, Fenerbahce, Real Madrid and Porto, and said of the moment the draw revealed Real Madrid as an opponent: "The first draw was Real Madrid and then we got drew as the first team against them. I was just like, 'that's completed now. If I can go to the Bernabeu, wow'." He added: "I'm just trying to take it in. Also, just understand that this is the reality and I'm a part of it."

Freckleton has also broken into international football with Jamaica, winning his first three caps during the September/October international break after beginning the citizenship process about a year earlier. He made his debut as a substitute against Honduras, then started and provided an assist and played the full match in Jamaica’s subsequent wins over El Salvador and Honduras. Reflecting on representing his father's country and his first return to Jamaica for a decade, he said: "I was raring to just show the country - my country - my ability. I wanted to just help my country win, because I realised how important football was and how different it is when you play for your country compared to club. It's just such a bigger scale. I know Jamaica's small, but it's still such a big thing out there."

Freckleton has been an unused substitute in LASK's three Champions League group matches so far and has said he hopes that run ends against Slovan Bratislava on Tuesday. He also has a Concacaf Nations League quarter-final against Mexico inked into his diary over two legs later this month.
