Mikel Arteta signs improved Arsenal contract extension through 2030
Mikel Arteta has agreed an improved contract extension with Arsenal that will run until 2030, according to reports dated 22 September 2026. The deal follows extended talks between the club and the manager after Arsenal clinched the league title last season.
The three-year contract Arteta signed in September 2024 is due to expire at the end of this season, and negotiations over fresh terms have been ongoing since May when Arsenal ended their long wait to be champions. Talks were paused during the transfer window, but Arteta has reached a verbal agreement to extend his stay for a second time. He took over as manager in December 2019.
The new agreement includes a substantial pay rise on his current package; Arteta can expect a significant increase on a salary believed to be about £10m a season. His existing deal is understood to include a £5m bonus for reaching the Champions League, and the revised contract will place him among the world’s highest-paid managers.
Arteta guided Arsenal to their first Premier League title since 2004 last season and also led the team to the Champions League final, which they lost to Paris Saint-Germain in a penalty shootout. Those achievements were cited as central to the club’s desire to reward him with improved terms.
Arsenal began the current campaign with seven straight victories in all competitions before suffering a 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Saturday. Ahead of that match Arteta addressed his contract situation directly, saying: “I think we are all very much aligned,” he said. “Whenever the time is right, we’ll get that done. There is nothing to be concerned about. I think we both have the same ambition and the same will.”
The 44-year-old is now the Premier League’s longest-serving manager following Pep Guardiola’s departure from Manchester City at the end of last season. The club’s intention to secure Arteta long term was described as recognition of the transformation he has overseen.
Arsenal are also pursuing a new contract for Declan Rice, who has entered the final two years of his deal; the club are understood to hold an option to extend that contract by 12 months. The club have indicated a preference to agree new terms for Rice that align with their policy of locking down what they consider to be Arteta’s most important players on long-term contracts.
