Millar’s 82nd-minute strike keeps Hull perfect after Coventry defeat

Hull beat Coventry at Coventry's home stadium in a Premier League match on 29 August 2026 when Liam Millar struck in the 82nd minute to decide the game.

The victory extended Hull's 100% start to the Premier League and followed last week's shock win over Manchester United. After Millar's strike the away end chanted, "We’re gonna win the league," with Frank Lampard, arms folded, watching on. For Coventry, owner and chair Doug King had described the occasion as historic, saying, "I know how much it means to all of us," as the club hosted a Premier League home match for the first time in more than 25 years. King wore an elephant brooch and joined tens of thousands of supporters in singing The Enemy's We'll Live and Die in These Towns, while pre-match pyrotechnics left a haze across the pitch.

Both teams lacked quality but Coventry were the more threatening side. Taiwo Awoniyi, on his full league debut for the club, sent a weak header at Konstantinos Tzolakis. Later, Loum Tchaouna's cross skidded off Nobel Mendy's head and forced Tzolakis into a smart right-hand save.

Frank Lampard cycled through substitutions, the arrival of Gus Hamer particularly lifting the home crowd. Despite that impetus, Coventry struggled to test Tzolakis further. For Hull, Liam Millar entered on the hour as a substitute for Elliot Stroud.

Millar missed Hull's best opening on 74 minutes when, after a clever first-time pass by Oli McBurnie, he ignored an unmarked Mohamed Belloumi to his right and sent a shot bobbling wide. Until that moment Hull's only shot on target had been a speculative 30-yard attempt from their left-back Mendy. Millar made amends in the 82nd minute, coolly slotting past Carl Rushworth to finish a devastating counterattack.

At full time Millar and Sergej Jakirovic conducted the Hull celebrations. The goal acted as a sucker-punch for Coventry, who had been pushing for a winner and had looked set to earn at least their first point of the season. The result condemned Coventry to successive defeats.
