Mirabai Chanu to contest women's 49kg at Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on September 23

Mirabai Chanu will compete in the women's 49kg weightlifting event at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Wednesday, September 23, and will aim to end her Asian Games medal drought.

The 32-year-old is a Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist, was world champion in 2017 and has claimed Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2018, 2022 and 2026, having completed her hat-trick of medals at Glasgow 2026 in July; she also holds World Championship silvers from 2022 and 2025.

Chanu made her Asian Games debut at Incheon 2014, finishing ninth, and she missed Jakarta 2018 because of a lower-back injury.

At Hangzhou 2023 she suffered thigh and hip injuries during her clean and jerk attempts and finished fourth with a total lift of 191kg.
