Mohammad Amir poised to register for IPL 2027 auction as UK national, reports say

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is reported to be set to register for the IPL 2027 mini-auction in Goa on December 16, 2026, as a British national, according to a Cricbuzz report. The 34-year-old, who lives in England, obtained a British passport in May 2026.
Amir’s change of nationality could allow him to enter the auction as a UK national rather than as a Pakistani citizen. Pakistani players have not featured in the IPL since the inaugural 2008 season following political tensions between India and Pakistan, and reports say his new citizenship is being viewed as a differing circumstance from those who still hold Pakistani nationality.
The Cricbuzz report states Amir has entered the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a UK national; that draft is scheduled for November 3, and he has been placed in the Platinum category. His involvement in the APL draft as a UK entrant is cited alongside the reports of his planned IPL registration.
Franchises preparing for the IPL 2027 auction are expected to target experienced overseas fast bowlers to address squad weaknesses, with player availability factored into auction strategies. Royal Challengers Bengaluru could seek an experienced fast bowler if Josh Hazlewood is unavailable for IPL 2027 because of international commitments, while Kolkata Knight Riders are reported to be considering reinforcements after suffering injury concerns last season. To date, neither RCB nor KKR has confirmed any interest in Amir.
Reports point to Amir’s left-arm pace and international experience as attributes that could attract teams seeking overseas seam options. The coverage also stresses that entering the auction does not guarantee a franchise will sign him, and his registration has not been confirmed.
The report cites a precedent in former Pakistan international Azhar Mahmood, who played in the IPL while holding a British passport and represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, 2013 and 2015. The coverage adds that, if Amir registers for the auction and is picked by a franchise, he could follow a similar path.
The IPL 2027 mini-auction is scheduled for December 16, 2026, in Goa, where Amir’s participation and the level of demand for him from franchises are expected to become clearer.
