Mohammed Siraj leaves field clutching ribs after dive in second Sri Lanka-India Test in Colombo

Mohammed Siraj left the field clutching his ribcage after diving while attempting a catch during the 11th over on Day 4 of the second Test between Sri Lanka and India in Colombo. Physios attended and he was escorted off for precautionary medical attention before returning to the field a short time later.
India entered the match with a growing injury list: Rishabh Pant did not take the field on Day 3 because of shoulder pain, and Jasprit Bumrah is absent from the Sri Lanka tour, leaving Siraj to lead the pace unit. Siraj is one of India’s main strike bowlers and has most frequently delivered the first blow to the opposition during this ongoing series, despite a modest tally of wickets in the series. Captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir were among those monitoring the situation closely after the incident.
The event occurred in the 11th over when Manav Suthar bowled with a shorter length to Sri Lankan batter Pasindu Sooriyabandara, who has been regularly sweeping the Indian spinner. The delivery produced a leading edge that carried towards mid-wicket; Siraj ran in from deep mid-wicket, stretched forward and dived to grab the ball. He managed to get his hands on the ball but failed to complete the catch, then landed awkwardly and immediately clutched his ribcage as he tumbled to the ground.
Physios rushed onto the field and Siraj was taken off for assessment. However, he took the field just a few moments later after having left the field to take some precautionary medical attention. Mohammed Siraj has picked 2 wickets so far in the ongoing second Test match against Sri Lanka.
Mohammed Siraj is India’s leading wicket-taker in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 cycle with 43* wickets.
India’s concern would be the workload on pacer Prasidh Krishna alone if Siraj doesn’t return to bowl any further in the game.
