Mohit Sharma appointed Chennai Super Kings bowling coach ahead of IPL 2027

Chennai Super Kings confirmed on September 29, 2026 that Mohit Sharma will join their coaching staff as bowling coach ahead of the Indian Premier League 2027, a move the franchise said was recommended by new head coach Zaheer Khan.

Since winning the 2023 IPL, CSK have failed to reach the playoffs in each of the following three seasons and finished the most recent edition in eighth place with six wins from 14 matches, a period that coincided with a change in captaincy and prompted alterations to the coaching setup.

Long-serving coach Stephen Fleming parted ways with CSK and Zaheer Khan was appointed to a one-year deal as head coach for the IPL 2027; reports in the Times of India said Zaheer recommended Mohit Sharma for the vacant bowling coach post, a development CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed in an interview.

Kasi Viswanathan was quoted saying: “Mohit will join CSK as our new bowling coach. His name was recommended by our head coach Zaheer Khan. Mohit was tremendous with us as a player as well, and we hope he will do a great job as bowling coach.”

Mohit Sharma’s playing record cited by the franchise includes 11 IPL seasons, 120 matches and 134 wickets with a best of 5/10; he featured in Gujarat Titans’ title-winning campaign in 2023 and spent four seasons with CSK, claiming the Purple Cap for the team in 2014 with 23 wickets.

The appointment follows the departure of Eric Simons from the CSK coaching group, and comes after Mohit announced his retirement from all forms of cricket on December 3, 2025, marking his move from playing into a coaching role.

The club said further additions to the coaching staff will be made on the head coach’s recommendation: “The next set of coaching staff will also be recruited on Zaheer’s recommendation in the coming weeks.”
