Mohun Bagan beat Mohammedan SC on CFL 2026 final day to end eight-year wait

Mohun Bagan defeated Mohammedan Sporting Club on the final matchday of the Calcutta Football League 2026 on 19 September 2026 to end an eight-year wait for the title. Sahal Abdul Samad scored twice and Sayan Banerjee provided the decisive strike to secure the championship.
Mohun Bagan opened the scoring in the first half before Mohammedan came back to level just before the interval, and the Black Panthers briefly led in the second half from a penalty. The match featured a red-card incident for Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper and a rapid response from the Mariners despite being reduced to 10 men.
The game began with Mohun Bagan on the front foot and a notable chance in the 13th minute when Sandeep Malik drove forward on a solo run into the Mohammedan penalty area; Kiyan Nassiri’s slower turn allowed Hira Mondal to intercept. The opening goal arrived in the 26th minute after Chhangte delivered a ball into the right half-space of the D-box and Sahal Abdul Samad met it with a powerful header.
Mohammedan levelled in the 43rd minute when Kima advanced through midfield, dribbled past two to three Mohun Bagan defenders and released a low driven pass to Lalremsanga, who finished into the net. That strike brought the teams level going into halftime.
Early in the second half Mohammedan enjoyed momentum and were awarded a penalty when Mohun Bagan goalkeeper Ghosh tackled a Mohammedan forward; Mohitosh Roy converted the spot-kick in the 62nd minute, and the goalkeeper was sent off for the incident. Down to 10 men, Mohun Bagan struck back: Manvir Singh climbed highest to cushion a header across the six-yard area and Sahal reacted to head in his second goal in the 70th minute.
Four minutes later former East Bengal FC young prodigy Sayan Banerjee produced an individual effort to score in the 74th minute that proved decisive.
