Mohun Bagan Super Giant beat Jamshedpur FC on penalties to reach Durand Cup semifinals

Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Jamshedpur FC 9-8 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regulation time to reach the semifinals of the 135th Durand Cup at Salt Lake Stadium on Monday.
Sahal Abdul Samad gave Bagan an early lead in the second minute, and Devendra Murgaonkar levelled for Jamshedpur toward the end of the first half. The competition’s rules did not provide for extra time, so the quarterfinal proceeded straight to a shootout.
Both sides converted their first five penalties, which forced sudden-death. The first 16 spot-kicks were successful before Jamshedpur’s Lawmsangzuala had his attempt saved by Bagan goalkeeper Vishal Kaith at 8-8; Tekcham Abhishek Singh then converted the decisive penalty for Bagan.
Mohun Bagan managed 24 attempts at goal but registered only eight shots on target, a statistic noted amid a struggle in the attacking third. Jamshedpur, by contrast, mounted a determined challenge with an all-Indian lineup during the match.
The club had announced its dissolution during the tournament and ultimately bowed out following the penalty defeat. The match was played in Kolkata as a Durand Cup quarterfinal.
Quarterfinal result: At Kolkata — Mohun Bagan 1 (Sahal Abdul Samad 2) drew with Jamshedpur FC 1 (Devendra Murgaonkar 45); Mohun Bagan won 9-8 on penalties.
The victory advances Mohun Bagan Super Giant into the semifinals of the 135th Durand Cup.
