Mohun Bagan to host Punjab in crucial Indian Super League match at Salt Lake Stadium

Mohun Bagan Super Giant will host Punjab FC at the Salt Lake Stadium in a crucial Indian Super League fixture on Saturday. Both teams enter the match with much at stake.

Separated by just a point, Punjab have seven points from three matches while Bagan have six points off three games. Punjab arrive unbeaten, coming off a 3-2 away win over Churchill Brothers that was sealed by Sanathoi Singh’s dramatic stoppage-time goal. Bagan will look to build on a hard-earned 1-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC at the same venue.

The fixture also renews a recent rivalry: the sides met in the IFA Shield semifinal earlier this month, playing out a goalless draw in 120 minutes before Bagan prevailed in a penalty shootout. In Indian Super League meetings, the Mariners have won all five previous encounters between the clubs, including a 3-2 victory in April.

Manvir will hope to have attacking returns again. He scored the 85th-minute strike that secured all three points for Bagan in the 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC, a goal described in reports as providing a timely fillip to the Mariners after an early-season setback.

Punjab will be determined to end Bagan’s run of wins against them and to underline its credentials as a genuine title contender, while Bagan will aim to extend its dominance over the Shers.

The match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday will determine whether Punjab can break Bagan’s string of ISL defeats to them or whether the Mariners will reinforce their unbeaten head-to-head record.
