Moises Henriques appointed Portugal captain for T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C

Moises Henriques has been named captain of Portugal for the T20 World Cup Europe Sub-Regional Qualifier C in Finland, which runs from August 14 to 20. He will captain Portugal's 14-member squad at the tournament.

Henriques played four Tests, 16 ODIs and 24 T20Is for Australia during his international career. He was born in Madeira, the Portuguese island that is also the birthplace of football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, and his family moved to Australia when he was a young child. Henriques enjoyed a long domestic career with New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers before announcing his retirement from Australian domestic cricket last month. He will continue playing overseas and is contracted to Glasgow Cosmic for the inaugural European T20 Premier League; he last represented Australia in 2021 and brings 44 international appearances to Portugal.

Portugal enter the Sub-Regional Qualifier C ranked 37th in the ICC men's T20I rankings and have been placed in Group B alongside Israel, Germany, Greece and Czechia. The qualifier will be staged in Finland from August 14 to 20, with group winners advancing to the tournament final on August 21. The competition format will see the final's winner move on to the European regional final.

Scotland, Jersey and Denmark have already secured places in the European regional final. From that regional final, the top two teams will advance to the global qualifier for the 2028 T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Portugal's squad contains a number of players with experience in other domestic systems, including former Sussex, Auckland and Wellington wicketkeeper-batter Craig Cachopa and Cameron Shekleton, who has represented South Africa A. Sebastian de Oliveira, who played a List A match for Gauteng alongside South Africa batter Ryan Rickelton, and Bangladesh-born spinner Siraj Ullah Khadem, who was included in the longlist for this year's Hundred auction, are also in the squad. Henriques takes over as captain from Carlos Nunes, who remains in the squad.

Portugal will open their campaign against Israel on August 14, then face Germany on August 15, Greece on August 17 and Czechia on August 20.
